Cyndy Fujikawa (actor/writer/producer): Cyndy has performed with East West Players (LA), Pick Up Performance (NY), hereandnow (LA), Theatre West (LA), Eureka Theatre Co. (SF), San Jose Repertory Theatre, A Contemporary Theatre (Seattle) and the Sacramento Theatre Co. She received her BA in theatre arts at San Francisco State University, and MFA at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. In the 1980s she co-founded the Encore Theatre Company in San Francisco, and produced/collaborated on its first 5 seasons. In 1995, she was selected as a Resident Artist at New York City’s internationally acclaimed avant-garde theatre company Mabou Mines, where her one person show, Old Man River, received its first workshop. In 1997, Old Man River had its world premiere and Off-Broadway debut at the New Victory. In 1998, Cyndy teamed up with Emmy award-winning director Allan Holzman and adapted Old Man River into a feature-length documentary feature. This film version was exhibited in cultural institutions and film festivals throughout the country, where it picked up several awards, including Best Documentary at Cinequest, the Amercian Cinema Editor’s award for Best Edited Documentary, and three prizes at the Vermont International Film Festival for Best In Social Justice, the Heart of the Festival, and The People’s Choice Award. In 1993 she produced and directed a documentary short, Day of Remembrance, which won the Social Change Award in the Media That Matters Festival in New York. As a playwright, Cyndy was among the first Van Lier Fellowship recipients at the New York Theatre Workshop. In 2005 she was commissioned to adapt the cherished memoir “Farewell to Manzanar” for Cornerstone Theatre Company. Other honors include grants from the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, the Civil Liberties Public Education Fund, the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program and Pick of the Week in LA Weekly. She is the daughter of actor Jerry Fujikawa and comes from a long line of vaudeville entertainers on her mother’s side. She is the proud mother of Sam and Nell Murphy.
