Family Planning by Michelle Kholos Brooks

a family.

by Pipedreams Entertainment, Inc., and by the Laurelgrove Theatre Co. at the Hollywood Court Theatre in Los Angeles. Brooks’ most recent production was a collection of short plays titled Love and Other Allergies, by the Vox Humana Theatre Ensemble at the Lounge Theatre

The Book of Judith by Judith Scott
In 2008, my father’s brother, in the process of dying, called the entire family to East Tennessee, up country, to the homeplace. It was the first time we’d been together since the mid 80’s when their father, my grandfather, passed away. I remember thinking, I do not want to be the funeral girl. All alone, I made 4 sojourns home. The trips south were unplanned, as I traveled with no maps, few surnames, a suitcase of restored photographs and a letter. I drove the hills and countryside of Tennessee, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina looking for members of both my mother and fathers families. Guided by instinct and intuition, I crashed church services and family reunions. Rummaged through boxes of family photos and abandoned graveyards.

This work in progress, is the result of my trips home.

Part two of The Book of Judith, not yet written, is the story of an inherited letter, written by my paternal great grandfather in 1909, to a government agency claiming Cherokee bloodline. Part one of The Book of Judith is a glimpse into the passionate life force on my mother’s side.
